Start with an accurate diagnosis
Do not compare replacement cost against a guessed repair. Ask what failed, why it failed, which other components were tested and whether the quoted repair addresses the underlying cause.
Factors that favour repair
Repair can make sense when the system is otherwise in good condition, the fault is isolated, parts remain available, the installation is sound and expected remaining life justifies the cost.
Factors that favour replacement
Consider replacement when major components repeatedly fail, parts are obsolete, corrosion is extensive, the refrigerant or piping creates constraints, capacity is unsuitable, efficiency is poor or repair cost is high relative to a properly installed new system.
Compare total project scope
A replacement quote should clarify units, piping, insulation, trunking, drainage, electrical work, removal, access, commissioning and warranty. Reusing old piping without assessment can undermine the expected benefit of a new system.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed age when aircon must be replaced?
No. Usage, maintenance, installation and component condition matter more than age alone.
Should piping always be replaced?
Not always, but compatibility, condition, insulation and manufacturer requirements should be assessed.
Can a chemical overhaul avoid replacement?
Only when contamination is the main performance problem. It cannot correct major mechanical wear or poor system sizing.
