Start with service scope, not the lowest headline price
A one-unit general service, multi-unit appointment, chemical wash, overhaul and fault diagnosis are different jobs. A useful quotation states exactly what is cleaned or tested, the number and type of units covered, and which work requires separate approval. Very low advertised prices may apply only to multiple accessible wall-mounted units or exclude transport, diagnosis and drainage work.
For a fair comparison, give each contractor the same unit count, property type, symptoms, service history and access information.
The main factors affecting price
Unit quantity affects travel and setup cost per unit. Cassette, ducted and VRV/VRF equipment requires different access and expertise from a standard wall-mounted split unit. Ceiling height, restricted condenser access, parking or building permits can add time. Heavy contamination, dismantling, leak testing and replacement parts also move the work beyond routine servicing.
General service, chemical wash and overhaul are not interchangeable
General service covers routine accessible cleaning and checks. Chemical wash is a deeper treatment for appropriate components. Chemical overhaul involves more extensive dismantling. Ask the contractor to list the actual tasks instead of relying only on the service label.
Questions to ask before confirming
Confirm whether the quote includes GST if applicable, transport or attendance, drainage clearing, diagnostic fees, high-access charges and the unit quantity. Ask how additional work will be approved and whether the stated workmanship warranty applies to the service. A transparent scope is more useful than a vague package name.
Frequently asked questions
Why do aircon servicing prices vary so much?
Different advertisements cover different unit counts, access conditions and tasks. Compare the written scope rather than the headline figure alone.
Should repair diagnosis be free?
Policies differ. The important point is that any diagnostic or attendance charge is disclosed before confirmation and whether it is credited if repair proceeds.
Is a maintenance contract always cheaper?
It can simplify recurring visits and reduce per-visit coordination, but value depends on the covered units, frequency, exclusions and actual usage.
